Silencio's Commitment to Data Privacy
At Silencio, privacy is our highest priority. We are committed to safeguarding our users’ personal information and location data. Here is how we ensure your privacy remains protected:
Non-Private Dataset
Silencio is dedicated to measuring ambient sound levels, represented exclusively in decibels. By focusing on dB(A) levels, Silencio respects user privacy. Our technology is designed to detect and quantify environmental noise, providing users with precise sound intensity readings in their surroundings. We do not capture, analyze, or store any spoken content, nor do we intercept or interpret verbal conversations. This ensures that our measurements do not infringe upon the confidentiality of spoken information. You can trust Silencio to deliver valuable insights into environmental noise levels without compromising your privacy.
Privacy by Design
Silencio adheres to the “privacy by design” principles, which means that data protection is embedded into our technology from the ground up. This approach ensures compliance with the most stringent data privacy laws and regulations. From the time a user signs up to the moment data is shared with a third party, we implement various mechanisms to protect user privacy.
Privacy in the Sign-up Procedure
Anonymous Usernames: To protect user identity, we encourage the creation of non-identifiable, random usernames or emails. If you prefer further anonymity, simply avoid disclosing your username. This ensures that contributions to map coverage are made anonymously. Even if you use a personal email address, Silencio hashes all usernames and emails and separates them from the datasets, ensuring they remain private and are never shared. However, users should maintain access to the email account used, as it is necessary for account recovery, password resets, and linking to your wallet.
No Personal Information Required: Silencio does not require personal information such as names, passwords, phone numbers, or credit card details. We never request or sell users’ personal information.
Narrow, Specific Consent: We take privacy seriously and are fully transparent about the consent we ask for. We only request consent to use your data to create your account during signup. Separate consent for commercializing specific datasets is requested within the app after each dataset is measured. If you choose not to provide this consent, you can still use the app to measure preferred datasets, refer other users, and view the data but will not receive Coins in return.
Transparent and Unambiguous: To support Silencioʼs privacy-by-design vision, we offer summaries of our privacy policy to help users quickly understand what they are agreeing to. We want every user to be fully aware of what they are agreeing to without having to navigate complex legal documents.
Age Verification: We ask that users be over 18, as this is the legal age for valid consent to the use of data. While this may not be required in all jurisdictions, we adhere to the strictest standards.
Privacy In-App Use
Data: Sound-level data collected by Silencio is dissociated from usernames, ensuring user anonymity. We do not share usernames, emails, or specific mapped locations. Silencio uses various methods to verify the location of mapping data while maintaining user anonymity.
Data Deletion: You can request the deletion of your data or opt out of data collection at any time.
Data Access: You can view your collected data at any time in the app.
Transparency and Ease of Use: We are committed to complete transparency. Consent is requested for each dataset measured, and this consent can be easily revoked by accessing the appʼs settings.
Usage Without Consent: Silencio does not require users to consent to anything to use the app. You can choose not to grant consent and still access the appʼs features in other ways.
Privacy in Data Storage and Commercialization
Data Minimization: We only access and store the data necessary for specific uses. Silencio never collects more data than needed and applies narrow, specific consent and data collection practices.
Anonymized Data Sales: We sell trends and statistical analyses rather than data related to individual users. We provide insights into trends within cities, countries, and specific locations, such as fast-food chains or stores.
Our Clients: We sell data to government agencies, data aggregation companies, technology companies, consultants, universities, and research institutions.
Consent on the Blockchain: We ensure that users fully understand what they are consenting to by implementing narrow data collection strategies. This, coupled with blockchain-based consent tracking, makes our products highly valuable in a market flooded with improperly managed data.
Legality of Data Sales
Silencio complies with privacy laws, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and US privacy regulations, concerning data collection and sales; these are justified under the legal basis of contract performance. Aggregated data (i.e., noise levels) is permissible, as it does not qualify as personal data under GDPR or US privacy laws. Furthermore, pseudonymized data sharing is conducted with sufficient consent, thus adhering to GDPR and US privacy regulations.
Compliance with GDPR and US Privacy Laws
Silencioʼs practices align with GDPR and US privacy laws, ensuring transparency and compliance in all data-related activities.
Legal Justification: Silencio processes data on a contract performance basis (Art. 6 1b, GDPR), ensuring legality from the start.
Aggregated Data: Sharing aggregated data is allowed, as it does not identify individuals (Art. 4 no. 1, GDPR).
Pseudonymized Data: Data sharing requires clear consent (Art. 6 1 a, GDPR), which Silencio ensures is freely given, specific, and informed.
We are Committed to Following the Principles of GDPR, which Include:
Data Minimization: We only collect data that is necessary for our services.
Right to Erasure: Users can request to have their data deleted at any time.
Transparency: We clearly explain what data we collect and how it is used.
User Consent: We obtain explicit consent to collect and process data, especially for microphone and location access.
Secure Storage: We use industry-standard encryption to protect personal data during storage and transmission, keeping it safe from unauthorized access.
Regular Audits: We conduct regular audits to ensure our data protection practices are up-to-date and compliant with regulations. We adapt quickly to any changes in privacy laws.
By following these practices, Silencio ensures that user data is handled securely and complies with GDPR, fostering trust and transparency.
