Mapping noise pollution with smartphones

Leveraging Smartphones to Map Hyper-local Noise Pollution Accurately

Smartphones, equipped with built-in microphones, provide a valuable opportunity to measure sound levels in decibels (dBa) and map out hyper-local noise pollution. Several apps and software programs have been designed to utilize smartphone microphones to capture sound data, displaying real-time results or storing the information for later analysis.

It is crucial to consider that the accuracy of noise pollution measurements depends on the smartphone microphone's quality and the app or software's calibration. In collaboration with our scientific advisors, we've conducted a study to evaluate the effectiveness of using smartphones to measure noise pollution. While we recognize that smartphones might not offer the highest precision, we believe that by gathering data from a substantial number of participants and data streams, we can minimize the margin of error and derive valuable insights into noise pollution trends.

By harnessing the power of smartphones and large-scale data collection, we aim to map noise pollution more accurately and contribute to a better understanding of its impact on our environment and well-being.

Our goal is to use gamification to encourage the measurement of noise pollution using smartphones while providing incentives to the community through the use of our token.
